What floor should I put in my kitchen?

Kitchens are tricky places for flooring, especially when they have a direct line to your dining room or living room. You want to have a nice, cohesive look extending from one room to the next, but the soft, luxurious carpet you have in your living room that’s perfect for warming your toes during an evening movie isn’t going to hold up to spaghetti sauce and oil splatter in your kitchen. What kind of flooring can stand up to the wetness, wear and tear that your kitchen can dish out but still look similarly attractive as the rest of your house? Here are a few choices:

How to make a room look bigger with tile

As a general rule, the larger the size whether it be a tile, plank or pattern the larger the item the larger it will make the room look. This does not mean that a busy pattern will make a room look larger. Even small rooms like powder rooms appear larger when larger flooring is used. Example: Tiles – choose tiles that are large to make the room appear larger, but not so larger that full tiles are not able to be installed across the room. Installing tile on the diagonal can help a room appear larger.

Wood floor maintenance is very important to sustain a brilliant surface as well as extend the life of the hardwood floor. Cleaning wood floors is only a part of the regular maintenance requirements.

Wood floors need to be protected in areas of moderate to heavy traffic by using a good quality mat or rug. The floor also needs to be protected from the weight of furniture whether they are stationary or being moved about the floor. Floor protectors or a mat should be placed under any part of furniture in contact with the wood floor. This prevents scratches, indentations, et cetera.

Hardwood Refinish

By hardwood refinishing we understand sanding of old hardwood and applying new coats of finish on it. Hardwood can be finished with polyurethane, paint or latex. The main point of hardwood finishing is to add protection layer to it. Wood itself is pretty exposed to water or dirt damages. Water damage can leave huge black stains on the wood. Those stains are hard to remove. It’s almost impossible to determine if water did go deep enough or it’s just a top surface damage. That is why not all the wood refinishers can guarantee water damage stain removal by sanding. The most confident way to remove water-damage stains is to replace wood boards (if possible) with new ones. In other hand dirt damage is easier to remove since it doesn’t penetrate in to the hardwood.

One of the most common question we hear from people planning on refinishing their floors is what finish should we choose, oil-based or water-based. This article will provide you with some information which might help you to pick one of them.

 Oil-based finishes.

In most of the cases oil-based finishes made out polyurethane resin, mineral spirits, silica and other ingredients depending on unique techniques of different manufacturers.  Some of these ingredients have unpleasant odor.  This odor usually stays in house for 2-5 days depending on material, ventilation, heating conditions and etc. Oil-based finish also needs more time to cure; it’s pretty soft for about 15 hours. In most of the cases, you can walk on a finished floor (only in socks) one day after finish is applied. As for the heavy furniture, you should let polyurethane to dry up for a week before bringing it in. Light tables, chairs and small furniture can be brought in earlier, but it’s not recommended. Rugs are not allowed to go in for another month, because it might block odors and volatilization

This article will help you to determine if you want to install unfinished hardwood or pre-finished hardwood floors in your house.

 Prefinished Hardwood

Prefinished hardwood is hardwood flooring which is finished by manufacturer. It goes in carton boxes, which prevent it from scratching during the transportation. Prefinished hardwood goes in different sizes and with different stain options. In general you will have limited amount of stains to choose from, but considering huge number of manufacturers, you will be able to pick the one you like. In general, prefinished hardwood has one or two options for the finish shine and in most of the cases it's semi-gloss. Only few manufacturers will be able to provide you with an option of gloss or satin finish you might like better. You're also limited with the finish type, because manufacturers of prefinished hardwood use some sort of mix of water and oil based finish. By adding oil-based finish they can add warmer color to the floor and then they apply couple more water-based coats to increase hardwood durability and add UV-protection to it. Some manufacturers use straight water-based finish. Nowadays different manufacturers try to create tons of different material options in order to eliminate these problems. Although they cannot do anything to remove tiny gaps which appear between boards whenever hardwood is installed.
